Scarecrows originated in Africa to watch over crops and were symbolic guardians of future generations. Today scarecrows are thought of as totems of death and fear and this speaks of the horrors inflicted upon people of color, but simultaneously represent hope and prosperity. Too many of these living sentinels throughout history have been dismissed and abandoned in a field to wither. This painting was inspired by Frederick Douglass' "What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?"
